HAZARD MITIGATION GRANT PROGRAM

The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) provides grants to state and local governments to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures after a major disaster declaration. The purpose of HMGP is to reduce the loss of life and property due to disasters and enable mitigation to be completed immediately following a disaster event.

The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program differs from other Hazard Mitigation Assistance programs because it is awarded following a presidential declared disaster event while the other programs are awarded on an annual basis. The key purpose of HMGP is to ensure that the opportunity to take critical mitigation measures is not wasted during the reconstruction process.
